What Are Token Unlocks? How Locked Tokens Work on Solana

Token unlocks explained in plain English. Learn what happens when locked tokens become available, how unlock schedules work, why they matter for price, and how to verify locks on Solana.

What Is a Token Unlock?

A token unlock is the moment when locked tokens become available to their holder again. Before the unlock date, those tokens are held in a smart contract vault and cannot be transferred, sold, or accessed by anyone. After the unlock date, the holder can withdraw them and do whatever they want.

Token unlocks are the other side of token locking. A project locks tokens to prove commitment. The unlock is when that commitment period ends and the tokens are released.

Not every unlock arrives at once. Token vesting releases tokens continuously across a schedule instead of on a single date, which spreads the supply increase rather than concentrating it into one event.

This matters because every token unlock increases circulating supply. If the holder sells, the additional supply hits the market and can push the price down. If they hold, nothing changes. The uncertainty around what happens after an unlock is why investors track unlock schedules closely.

Why Token Unlocks Matter

Token unlocks are one of the most important events in a token's lifecycle. Here is why:

Supply and price. When locked tokens unlock, they enter circulating supply. A project with 100 million tokens in circulation and 50 million locked is about to see a 50% increase in available supply when those tokens unlock. If sellers outnumber buyers at that point, the price drops.

Trust signals. Investors check unlock schedules before buying. A token where the team's allocation unlocks in 30 days looks very different from one where the team is locked for 12 months. Longer lock periods signal stronger commitment.

Market timing. Large unlocks from venture capital investors, team wallets, or early backers often trigger sell pressure. Experienced traders monitor upcoming unlocks across the market and adjust their positions accordingly.

Project credibility. Projects that voluntarily lock their tokens and set reasonable unlock schedules are taken more seriously by the community. Projects with no locks or very short lock periods raise immediate red flags.

Types of Token Unlocks

Not all unlocks work the same way. The most common types:

Cliff Unlock

A cliff unlock releases all locked tokens at once on a single date. Nothing is available before the cliff date. On that date, everything unlocks simultaneously.

Cliff unlocks are simple and easy to verify. The risk is that a large amount of tokens hits the market at one time, which can cause significant sell pressure if the holder decides to sell.

Example: A team locks 10 million tokens with a 12 month cliff. For 12 months, none of those tokens are accessible. On day 366, all 10 million tokens unlock at once.

Linear Unlock

A linear unlock releases tokens gradually over a period of time. Instead of everything unlocking at once, a fixed amount becomes available at regular intervals (daily, weekly, or monthly).

Linear unlocks spread the potential sell pressure over time, which is generally healthier for the token's price stability.

Example: A team locks 12 million tokens with a 12 month linear unlock. Each month, 1 million tokens unlock and become available.

Cliff Plus Linear

Many projects combine both approaches. A cliff period comes first (no tokens available), followed by a linear release schedule.

Example: 6 month cliff, then 12 month linear unlock. Nothing is available for the first 6 months. After that, tokens release gradually over the following 12 months.

TGE Unlock

A TGE (Token Generation Event) unlock releases a percentage of tokens immediately at launch. The remaining tokens follow a separate lock and unlock schedule.

Example: 10% unlocked at TGE, 6 month cliff on the remaining 90%, then 12 month linear unlock.

Permanent Lock

Some tokens or LP positions are locked permanently, meaning they will never unlock. This is the strongest possible commitment signal. Permanent locks are common for liquidity pool tokens where the project wants to guarantee that liquidity can never be pulled.

Who Locks Tokens and Why

Different participants lock different allocations for different reasons:

Team tokens. Founders and core team members lock their personal allocations to prove they are committed to building the project long-term. A team with unlocked tokens can dump on holders at any time. Locked team tokens remove that risk.

Investor allocations. Seed round, private sale, and presale investors often have their tokens locked with a vesting schedule. This prevents early investors from selling everything on day one and crashing the price.

Dev wallets. Developer allocations are locked to show that the builders are aligned with holders. If devs can sell freely, their incentive to keep building weakens.

Treasury tokens. Project treasuries hold tokens for future development, marketing, partnerships, and operations. Locking treasury tokens prevents premature spending and shows responsible token management.

LP tokens. Liquidity provider tokens represent ownership of a DEX liquidity pool. Locking LP tokens prevents the project from pulling liquidity (a rug pull). This is one of the most important locks for holder safety.

How to Check if a Token Has Locked Supply

Before buying any token, checking whether key allocations are locked is one of the most important due diligence steps. Here is how:

Legitimate projects share lock proof in their Telegram, on X, and in their documentation. Look for direct links to a lock explorer page showing the token address, locked amount, and unlock date.

Use a Token Locker Explorer

Token locker platforms provide public explorers where anyone can search by token address or wallet address and verify locks without logging in or connecting a wallet. On StakePoint, every lock is visible at stakepoint.app/locks with full details including the locked amount, unlock date, and transaction history.

Verify On-Chain

Every token lock on Solana is a transaction recorded on the blockchain. Tools like Solana Explorer and Solscan let you view the program accounts holding locked tokens directly. This is the most trustless way to verify because you are reading the blockchain itself rather than relying on any platform's interface.

Use Token Screening Tools

Various screening and analysis tools in the Solana ecosystem flag whether a token's LP is locked, whether team wallets are locked, and other safety indicators. These tools aggregate on-chain data and present it in a digestible format for quick evaluation.

What Happens When Tokens Unlock

The price impact of a token unlock depends on several factors:

Size relative to circulation. An unlock of 1% of circulating supply is very different from an unlock of 50%. Larger unlocks relative to circulation carry more risk.

Who is unlocking. Team unlocks and VC investor unlocks tend to cause more concern than community or ecosystem fund unlocks. The assumption is that teams and early investors are more likely to sell, especially if the token has appreciated significantly since their entry.

Market conditions. An unlock during a bull market may have minimal impact because there are enough buyers to absorb the additional supply. The same unlock during a bear market can accelerate a price decline.

Project fundamentals. If the project has strong fundamentals, active development, and growing adoption, an unlock may not matter at all. Holders who believe in the long-term value may hold through the unlock or even buy the dip.

Unlock type. Cliff unlocks create more uncertainty than linear unlocks because all the supply hits at once. Linear unlocks spread the pressure and give the market time to absorb additional supply gradually.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are token unlocks bad?

Not necessarily. Token unlocks are a normal part of a token's lifecycle. They become a concern when the unlock is large relative to circulating supply and the holder is expected to sell. Small unlocks, linear schedules, and strong project fundamentals can all reduce the impact of an unlock.

How do I find upcoming token unlocks?

For major Solana and cross-chain projects, token unlock aggregators track upcoming unlock events and their estimated market impact. For individual tokens, check the project's documentation or search for the token on a lock explorer to see the unlock schedule directly.

What is a cliff unlock?

A cliff unlock releases all locked tokens at once on a single date. Nothing is available before the cliff. Everything becomes available on the cliff date. This creates more concentrated sell pressure compared to a linear unlock.

Can locked tokens be unlocked early?

On a properly built non-custodial locker, no. The smart contract enforces the unlock date and nobody can override it. On StakePoint, all locks are held in Program Derived Address vaults with no admin keys and no cancel capability. The tokens are inaccessible until the unlock date regardless of who created the lock.

How do I verify a token lock on Solana?

On StakePoint, go to stakepoint.app/locks and search by token address or wallet address. Every lock shows the locked amount, unlock date, and full transaction history. No login required. You can also verify any Solana token lock directly on Solana Explorer or Solscan by viewing the program accounts.

What is the difference between locking and burning tokens?

Locking tokens puts them in a time-locked vault. They still exist and will eventually be available again on the unlock date. Burning tokens removes them from supply permanently. They can never be recovered. Locking is used when the holder wants the tokens back eventually. Burning is used to permanently reduce supply.

How long should tokens be locked?

There is no universal answer, but community expectations on Solana in 2026 have settled around some common standards. For LP tokens, 180 days is the minimum that most holders consider credible. 365 days is expected by serious investors. For team tokens, 12 months is the minimum, with 18 to 24 months being stronger. Permanent locks on LP tokens are the strongest possible signal.
