How Long Should You Lock Tokens on Solana?
Most Solana projects lock team and developer allocations for 6 to 24 months, presale and seed allocations for 3 to 12 months released in stages, and liquidity for as long as the project intends to trade. Solana itself enforces no minimum. The duration is a signal you choose, and holders read it as a statement about how long you plan to stay.
The wrong lock duration does more damage than no lock at all. A 30 day lock on a team allocation tells a community exactly when to sell, and they will sell before you do.

Standard Lock Periods by Allocation Type
| Allocation | Common lock duration | What holders expect to see |
|---|---|---|
| Team tokens | 12 to 24 months | A long single lock or a cliff followed by staged releases |
| Developer or founder wallet | 12 months minimum | Longer than the team allocation, not shorter |
| Presale and seed allocations | 3 to 12 months | Staged unlocks so no single date floods the market |
| Treasury and reserves | 6 to 18 months | Locked in tranches tied to roadmap milestones |
| Marketing and partnerships | 3 to 6 months | Shorter, because the tokens are meant to be spent |
| Liquidity pool tokens | Life of the project | The longest lock on the project, or permanent |
These are conventions, not rules. What matters is that the duration you pick is longer than the horizon your buyers are pricing in.
Why Short Locks Backfire
A lock period is a public countdown. Every lock is on-chain with a visible unlock date, and a serious holder will check it before buying.
If your team allocation unlocks in 30 days, you have published a sell date. Traders position around it, the chart weakens as the date approaches, and the unlock itself becomes a negative event regardless of whether you sell.
A 12 month lock removes that countdown from short term consideration entirely. Nobody trades around a date that far out. The lock stops being a risk marker and starts being a trust marker.
Cliff Unlocks vs Staged Unlocks
A cliff unlock releases the entire allocation on one date. A staged unlock releases portions across several dates.
Cliff unlock: simple, easy to communicate, and appropriate for small allocations. The drawback is concentration. Everything hits the market at once, and the market knows it.
Staged unlock: create several separate locks with different unlock dates. Lock 25 percent for 6 months, 25 percent for 12 months, 25 percent for 18 months and 25 percent for 24 months. Each unlock is small enough to absorb, and the schedule proves you are pacing your own exposure.
Staged unlocks are the stronger structure for anything above a token or two percent of supply. On StakePoint each tranche is created as its own lock in a separate PDA vault, so all four appear individually in the public lock explorer with their own unlock dates.
Matching Lock Duration to Your Roadmap
Tie unlock dates to what you are building rather than to round numbers. A lock that expires the month before a major release looks accidental. A lock that expires the month after looks deliberate.
A useful test: if a holder maps your unlock dates against your roadmap, does the sequence make sense? Locks that expire after delivery milestones read as funding for the next phase. Locks that expire before delivery read as an exit.
How Long to Lock Liquidity
Liquidity is the one allocation where the answer is different. LP tokens should carry the longest lock on the project, because unlocked liquidity is the single fastest path to a rug pull and the first thing a buyer checks.
Projects that intend to run for years lock liquidity for years. Projects that intend to run indefinitely lock in long rolling periods and renew, or remove the question entirely by burning the LP. The tradeoffs between those two paths are covered in the burn LP or lock LP guide.

Can a Lock Be Extended or Ended Early?
On StakePoint, locks are enforced by on-chain program logic in a Program Derived Address vault with no admin keys and no cancel instruction. Nothing releases before the unlock date. Not the project team, not StakePoint, not anyone holding a key, because there is no key.
That is the entire point of the design, and it is why the duration you choose matters at creation time. There is no early release path to fall back on if you set the date too far out.
To extend commitment beyond an existing unlock date, create a new lock for the same tokens once the original expires, or lock a second tranche now with a later date so the schedule extends before the first one matures. The second approach is better, because the extension is visible in advance rather than announced after the fact.
What Happens When a Token Lock Expires
At the unlock date the tokens become claimable by the wallet that created the lock. Nothing moves automatically and nothing is force transferred. The lock simply stops enforcing.
Two things are worth planning before that date arrives:
Announce ahead of it. An unlock a community knows about is a scheduled event. An unlock a community discovers on a block explorer is an incident.
Decide what happens next. Relocking a portion at the unlock date is a strong signal, and it costs nothing except the commitment itself.
Choosing a Lock Duration in Practice
Split each allocation into tranches rather than treating it as one block
Set the first unlock beyond the horizon your buyers are trading on, which in practice means 6 months at minimum
Space later tranches so no single date carries more than a few percent of supply
Give liquidity the longest duration of anything you lock
Publish the full schedule so holders can verify every date themselves
Every lock created on StakePoint is publicly verifiable at stakepoint.app/locks with no wallet connection and no login. Anyone can search by token address or wallet address and see the locked amount and the exact unlock date.
Setting a Lock Duration on StakePoint
Locking takes under two minutes and requires no code.
Go to stakepoint.app/locks and connect your wallet
Select the token or LP token you want to lock
Enter the amount for this tranche
Choose the unlock date
Confirm the transaction
Repeat for each tranche in your schedule. StakePoint supports SPL and Token-2022 tokens, including tokens with transfer taxes, on locks of any duration.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should team tokens be locked on Solana?
Team allocations are commonly locked for 12 to 24 months, often as a cliff followed by staged releases. Anything under 6 months publishes a near term sell date and tends to weaken the chart as it approaches.
How long should a developer wallet be locked?
At least as long as the team allocation, and ideally longer. A dev wallet unlocking before team tokens is the sequence holders flag first.
What is a good lock duration for presale allocations?
Three to twelve months released in tranches rather than a single cliff. Staged unlocks keep each release small enough for the market to absorb.
Can I unlock tokens before the unlock date on StakePoint?
No. Locks are held in PDA vaults enforced by on-chain program logic with no admin keys and no cancel capability. The unlock date is final once the lock is created.
Can I extend an existing token lock?
The existing lock cannot be edited, but you can lock additional tranches with later unlock dates at any time, which extends your published schedule and is visible to holders immediately.
How do holders check my lock duration?
Every lock is searchable at stakepoint.app/locks by token or wallet address, with no login required, and is also verifiable directly on Solana Explorer.
Does the lock duration affect security?
The vault design is identical regardless of duration. What duration changes is the signal. Longer locks remove the countdown that short locks create.
